EGPWS Military Applications

Honeywell's Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) combines the best of the GPWS with the latest in (proven) situational awareness, terrain presentation, and forward-looking alerting. From ground proximity warning to altitude/bank angle/glideslope monitoring to reactive windshear detection and warning, to world-wide terrain/airport database (with obstacles option) to Terrain Clearance Floor to Terrain Awareness System (display & look-ahead) to new features Geometric Altimetry and "Peaks Mode" Display … the EGPWS incorporates the full range of hazardous terrain alerting capability.

Honeywell's EGPWS is not a prototype nor a new player in the market. The EGPWS is the only fully functioning, flight-proven, basic-equipment-on-new-aircraft Controlled-Flight-Into-Terrain (CFIT) prevention technology flying today. It is a cost-effective, low-risk flight safety system with industry-wide acceptance. It is a result of more than 30 years of research and development and an unrelenting passion for making air travel safe. While deploying such innovative technologies as the EGPWS, Honeywell continues to work hand-in-hand with the aviation industry to eliminate the vexing problem of CFIT.

Two important factors should be considered when evaluating the total value of a solution: 1) approvals/certifications; and 2) operational experience.

Relative to approvals/certifications... Honeywell's EGPWS is certified on over 200 aircraft types. It is standard equipment on all Airbus and Boeing production aircraft types. The EGPWS is approved against all relevant TSOs, including -C92c for ground proximity warning, -C117 for reactive windshear detection, and -C151a for terrain awareness and warning (TAWS).

Relative to operational experience... Honeywell's EGPWS is operated by over 100 airlines and numerous government/military organizations on more than 5,800 aircrafts, having so far accumulated over 30,000,000 flight hours of world-wide experience. Military applications to date include U.S. military KC-135, C-5, C-141, KC-10, E-4, C-9, C-20, VC-25, VC-32, VC-37, C-21, C-40, C-2, VP-3, C-12, C-23, and C-35 aircraft plus International military C-130, G-IV, Nimrod MRA4, and C-295.
